Study says just 7% of American have good cardiometabolic health

Only 7% of Americans have good cardiometabolic health. A study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology measured five components necessary to maintain good health — blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, weight, and absence of cardiovascular disease. Only 6.8% of U.S. adults had ideal levels in all five categories. Researchers are now advocating for improvements in our food and healthcare systems to address these results. (Tufts University)

Researchers uncover brain pathway that explains light’s effect on mood

Can light affect our mood? In a new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, researchers found a link between light exposure and activity in the prefrontal lobe. This region of the brain controls a variety of complex emotional and cognitive responses – as well as our mood. While more research is needed to pinpoint light’s exact effects on the brain, this could provide insight into the cause of depressive disorders, such as seasonal affective disorder. Gene regulation may be the key to a long life

What’s the secret to a long life? Research for a paper published in Cell Metabolism found that gene expression helps determine longevity. Species that live longer tend to have low expression of genes related to energy metabolism and inflammation. However, they also have a high expression of genes involved with DNA repair and RNA transport. This research paves the way for future anti-aging interventions that can target specific genes. Experts say “natural” labeling on cigar packaging is misleading

And finally…how cigar labels are misleading consumers. A new study found in Tobacco Control says that many companies are falsely labeling their cigars as “natural” on the packaging. This incorrect descriptor worries public health officials, as it makes nicotine look more appealing and less harmful than it truly is. Health departments are now calling on the FDA to crack down on advertising regulations for tobacco products.
