Medical Notes: A New Cause of Infertility, the Future of Drinking Ocean Water, and Why You Should Embrace PDA

Researchers Discover a New Cause of Infertility

A study in the journal Environmental International has found that air pollution can harm embryo development in IVF cycles. Issues stem from both maternal and paternal exposure to outdoor air pollution. Specifically, exposure to organic carbon, which is emitted from cars and wildfires, negatively impacts fertilization, survival, and embryo quality. (Emory University)

Not All Teens Grow From Adversity

Severe challenges – like abuse or poverty – can significantly impact teenage brain development. Researchers have found that these experiences can cause delayed development in certain brain regions linked to a higher risk of substance abuse and mental health disorders. The studies are published in the journals Development and Psychopathology and Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging. (Virginia Tech University)

Will the Ocean Be Our Newest Drinking Water Source?

A natural chemical in seawater, called boron, becomes toxic in drinking water when processed through conventional salt-removing filters. Thankfully, a new technology has been shown to efficiently remove boron. The device can cut costs by up to 15 percent, saving about seven billion dollars a year. Researchers hope this will help make seawater a more accessible source of drinking water. The work is published in the journal Nature Water. (University of Michigan)

Why You Should Embrace PDA

Psychologists say that affectionate touch helps us maintain intimacy and offer support in relationships. For long-distance relationships, describing how you wish you could touch or blowing kisses on FaceTime can help couples manage the separation. (Syracuse University)
