AI accurately predicts if and when fatal heart attacks occur

Artificial intelligence can predict fatal heart attacks. The new technology uses raw images of diseased hearts and patients’ medical backgrounds to determine if and when a heart attack will occur. The findings, published in Nature Cardiovascular Research, show that this algorithm is significantly more accurate in its predictions than medical doctors (Johns Hopkins University).

Lack of diversity in Alzheimer’s research threatens accurate diagnosis

A lack of patient diversity in Alzheimer’s research threatens accurate diagnosing in people of color. A new study published in Neurology shows how three experimental blood tests put Black patients at a higher risk of misdiagnosis. Since most of the test’s data comes from white participants, the results are skewed to only notice biomarkers that appear in that population. The paper’s lead author says it reveals the need for more patient diversity in Alzheimer’s research.

Study says 1 in 3 Americans will develop substance use disorder

One in three Americans will develop a substance use disorder, according to a recent study. Scientists followed over 5,000 participants for 32 years in an effort to identify the long-term outcomes of having a substance use disorder as an adolescent. A majority of the 18-year-olds continued to have symptoms as adults. The research, published in JAMA Network Open, suggests doctors need to rethink how they screen and prescribe medication to patients with a history of substance use disorder.

Is religion the downfall of consumerism?

And finally…is religion the downfall of consumerism? A new paper in the Journal of Consumer Research shows how people who believe in God’s unconditional love are less likely to buy self-improvement products. For example, when grocery shopping, this demographic spends less money on low-fat food options. Researchers say the results are consistent across various denominations of Christianity.
