While there are a few different sources, MIT president Sally Kornbluth says the federal government is the largest funder of university research.
A portion of the money is allocated to the indirect costs of research, meaning the university’s operating costs of maintenance, utilities, and administrative support staff. And not only do grants cover direct costs, like the lab equipment, supplies, publishing fees, and necessary travel – but they also serve as the salaries for people working on the project.
