The Disease Of Kings: Breaking The Stigma Around Gout

You are here: Home / Archive / Feature Stories / The Disease Of Kings: Breaking The Stigma Around Gout
Published: August 22, 2026 by RHJ Producer

While an active lifestyle can prevent a lot of illnesses, some debilitating conditions strike out of nowhere. Gout is a type of inflammatory arthritis affecting over twelve million Americans. The pain can be so severe that even the weight of a bedsheet is unbearable. Our experts explain the root cause of gout and why a persistent, outdated stigma keeps millions of sufferers from seeking help.

Guest Information:

  • Dr. Suneet Grewal, rheumatologist, East Bay Rheumatology Medical Group
  • Glenn, patient

The older we get, the more important our health becomes. Breaking an arm as a kid can feel like a rite of passage, but as an adult it can completely derail your life. But even for people like Glenn, who make sure to find time for fitness, there are some things even the healthiest of people can’t avoid.

Dr Suneet Grewal says that gout often cannot be fixed through diet changes alone, because there’s usually more underlying components causing the condition.
