Doctors know that the older a pregnant woman is, the more it can affect her newborn’s health. But a new study shows that older dads may also be a risk to their child’s physical wellbeing. A study in the journal Maturitas finds that a decline in testosterone due to aging may cause sperm degradation and poorer semen quality. Researchers say this leads to a higher risk for conditions like decreased birth weight or newborn seizures. Apparently, just as men lose muscle strength and endurance over time, sperm also tend to lose fitness.
Antibiotics might be breaking hearts across the country. According to a new study in the European Heart Journal, middle-aged and older women taking antibiotics over a long period of time are at a greater risk for cardiovascular disease. Researchers say middle-aged women using antibiotics for two months or longer have a 28 percent increased risk of heart attack or stroke, while older women are 32 percent more likely to develop heart disease. Researchers warn that antibiotics should be used only when absolutely necessary.
