Children as young as five may soon be part of the tug of war over vaccine mandates, now that the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine is up for approval by the FDA. The companies say the vaccine, cut down to a one-third dose, is safe and effective for children five to 12 years old, and the FDA may rule on making it available for them by Halloween.
Several important Covid studies are out from the CDC. One of them shows that over the summer, unvaccinated people were 10 times more likely to be hospitalized, and 11 times more likely to die of Covid than the fully vaccinated. Another CDC report finds that the Moderna vaccine is slightly better at preventing hospitalization from Covid than the Pfizer vaccine… and significantly more effective than the Johnson & Johnson one-shot vaccine. The studies also find that the highly contagious delta variant now makes up more than 99 percent of all Covid infections.
And finally… doctors have long known that people who experienced childhood trauma are more likely to grow up with an addiction, but they didn’t know why. Now a study in the journal Addiction Biology finds that people with a trauma history get more of a high from morphine than people who’ve been trauma-free. In fact, those who never had trauma more often feel sick from morphine. Scientists speculate that childhood trauma affects the development of what’s called the endogenous opioid system, the body’s natural pain-relieving system.
