New research gets us one step closer to a cure for rheumatoid arthritis

Scientists have recently identified another protein that helps drive the autoimmune condition. Many patients become resistant to medication that targets the main inflammatory protein, called TNF, so this new discovery could give the drugs a second target. The research, published in the journal Cellular and Molecular Immunology, is helping to drive the development of new combination therapies for the illness (Washington State University).

Though these bills are often associated with cancer, a new study shows that people with asthma, heart disease, and mood disorders also have elevated rates of medical debt. The study, published in the journal Preventive Medicine, reports that this connection exists for people at all income levels – making it a society-wide issue (Rutgers University).

Happy thoughts can extend the effects of antidepressants

Research in the American Journal of Psychiatry suggests that computer-generated positive words and imagery can prolong the effects of a single ketamine injection. Participants with this treatment combination reported feeling fewer depression symptoms over a longer period of time than the control group. The research aims to give patients more effective depression care while saving them money (University of Pittsburgh).
