Medical Notes: Generational Trauma, How Covid Affects Our Vision, and How To Pull Yourself out of a Rut

Trauma can span generations – even after adoption

Research published in Development and Psychopathology has shown a connection between a birth mother’s suffering and her child’s behavioral issues. Even when adopted as newborns and never exposed to the biological mom’s traumatic experience, these kids often show more rule-breaking and aggressive behavior. The next question is how does stress manage to move through generations? (University of Oregon)

Should kids stop bringing lunch to school?

All schools with the national school lunch program are required to follow the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act nutritional guidelines. And guess what? These lunches are improving the students’ diets, according to a new study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. Kids from low-income households were more than 10 percent healthier when eating school lunches rather than food from home. (University of Georgia)

Your eyes need protection from the coronavirus

Researchers have discovered that the virus that causes Covid-19 can lead to vision impairment. A study in PLOS Pathogens shows that the virus breaks through the blood-retinal barrier, triggering inflammation that can cause vision loss. The scientists advise that anyone diagnosed with Covid-19 see an ophthalmologist to check for any changes in the retina. Even people who are a-symptomatic could have damage. (University of Missouri)

Do you need a change in life?

After surveying thousands of people across the globe, Dr. Adam Alter says 99 percent report feeling stuck. To get out of this rut, long-term goals are essential. And in order to stay on track, set short-term benchmarks within the larger goal to continually have positive measures of your progress. Fear can also make tasks feel threatening and lower our chances of accomplishing the goal. Instead, think of the task as a challenge – where success is measured by doing your best. (University of Chicago)
