Will the war in Ukraine escalate global food insecurity?

Ukraine is often called the ‘bread basket of Europe’ because it’s a major exporter of wheat and corn. however, a recent paper, published in Nature Food, predicts a significant drop in exports from both Ukraine and Russia, which would raise the cost of these products. These price hikes are expected to worsen food insecurity in poorer countries in the middle east and Africa.

Overcrowding in emergency departments is becoming a risk to patient safety.

Over the last few years, two studies, which appear in JAMA Network Open, surveyed how many patients leave the ER before receiving care, and the wait-time for patients to be admitted to the hospital after seeing an ER physician. On average, the waiting period was six and a half hours, exceeding the national recommendation of four hours — and the rates of patients leaving before treatment has doubled since 2017. Researchers say the issue is only worsening.

A new lighting design for motorcycles may save lives.

Research shows that motorcycle drivers are 27 times more likely to die in an accident than people in a car. Fortunately, a new paper in the journal Transportation Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behavior, might have a solution to safer riding. Scientists are experimenting with changing the single headlight on a motorcycle to six lights. The design, which shows off the full height of a bike and its rider, improved reaction time of other drivers on the road.

The idea for a new medical glue was found under the sea.

Marine animals like mussels inspired this new adhesive that uses suction to absorb blood and bond to the tissue, creating a complete seal. The glue was tested in a new study, published in Nature Communications, and researchers hope it can one day replace the need for wound sutures.
