NueroString could be the future of detecting chemical imbalances

A new invention helps researchers study the body’s chemistry. This innovation, called NeuroString, is a small implant that measures brain and gut health. The probe, which is described in Nature, detects levels of serotonin and dopamine in the enteric nervous system. This non-invasive technique has the potential to detect chemical imbalances that cause various health conditions, such as depression or Parkinson’s disease.

Biodegradable spray-on coating could replace plastic wrap

Spray-on coating could eventually replace plastic wrap. A study found in Nature Food describes the biodegradable, plant-based material. It’s spun from a heating device and can be shrink-wrapped over foods of various shapes and sizes. Compared to plastic wrap, which is petroleum based, the coating is more sustainable and non-toxic. It also prevents food spoilage and can be easily rinsed off with water.

How to stay cool and lower your energy bill

How to stay cool while lowering your energy bill? Passive cooling consists of techniques that focus on reducing heat gain, and increasing heat loss. These strategies, which are described in the journal Applied Energy, include opening windows at night and using blinds to intercept direct sunlight. Since most buildings are designed to keep heat in, these techniques can be a lifeline – especially for those without AC. And for people with AC, reducing usage keeps the bills down and lowers the risk of a power outage.

Study finds that women are 13% less likely to get named as authors on their work compared to men

And finally…women in science don’t always get credit for their work. A study published in Nature found that women are 13 percent less likely to get named as authors on their work compared to their male counterparts. Administrative data from universities show that many women who participate in research are not credited when the final paper comes out. And when looking at patent applications, the gap increases to 59 percent.
