Do you know your blood type?
It might not matter anymore thanks to new research published in Science Translational Medicine. Scientists have created synthetic platelets, which are small cell fragments in our blood that form clots and stop bleeding. Many people who are receiving chemotherapy, going into surgery, or have severe bleeding need platelet transfusions given by blood donors. However, there’s a limited supply available and the platelets have a short shelf life. The new synthetic platelets can be used with any blood type and go directly to the injury to promote healing. They’ve currently only been tested in animal models. (NC State)
Everyone wants the freedom to choose – especially when it comes to vaccines
Unlike the yearly flu shot, Americans had a choice between three Covid-19 vaccines. A new study in the Journal of Applied Research in Memory and Cognition shows that these options raised overall willingness to get vaccinated. This reaction is called the ‘pleasure of choice,’ and it could help improve public health policy and change how future vaccines are presented. (University of Oregon)
A warmer winter is bad news for the coming spring
Raised temperatures can cause higher levels of pollen, a main cause of spring allergies. A study in the journal Scientific Reports shows that climate change has been creating longer pollen and mold seasons by eight to nine weeks each year during the last two decades. (Stanford University)
