Medical Notes: Nightmares May Be Signaling a Deeper Illness, Why Older Women Should Go Vegan, and Some People Don’t Have an Inner Voice

Bad night of sleep?

It could be signaling an autoimmune disease. A new study in E-Clinical Medicine has found a correlation between nightmares and lupus, a chronic illness. Neuro-psychiatric symptoms like confusion and vivid nightmares may also act as early warning signs of an oncoming flare-up of a person’s disease. It’s important to understand these symptoms so that patients aren’t wrongly diagnosed with a different condition such as schizophrenia. (UC Davis)

Older women may want to consider a vegetarian diet

Consuming protein is important for everyone’s overall health, especially as we age. However, new research shows that plant protein may be more beneficial for aging women. A study in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveals that plant protein is linked to lower levels of LDL cholesterol, blood pressure, and insulin sensitivity. Therefore, experts recommend a diet driven by plant sources, plus a small amount of animal protein, for better mental and physical health.

It’s recently been discovered that a small part of the population has no inner voice

Instead of words, they think in terms of space or imagery – and new research is showing that this strategy could worsen their verbal memory. A study published in Psychological Science tasked participants with remembering similar words. Researchers found that the people without an inner voice performed significantly worse. However, this is only scratching the surface of research on people without an inner monologue. (University of Copenhagen)

Can magic mushrooms cure a stutter?

Psychedelic therapy has proven to be helpful for conditions like anxiety and PTSD. Since these disorders share symptoms with stuttering, researchers think it could be a treatment option worth looking into. A preliminary self-reported study in the Journal of Fluency Disorders shows that a majority of users say these drugs did reduce their stutter. (NYU)
