Caregivers are so stressed, it even impacts their cells

A new study published in Psychosomatic Magazine reveals that the daily stress caregivers experience lowers their cellular energy. Low energy in cells can cause people to experience fewer positive emotions and have a higher risk of developing dementia. Researchers hope these findings can lead to more therapeutic and pharmaceutical options for caregivers to protect their health on a molecular level.

Lung cancer is difficult to cure, but diabetes medication might help.

A study in Clinical Cancer Research says that lung cancer is notoriously resistant to chemotherapy, but a diabetes drug called epalrestat is making tumors more susceptible to treatment. Researchers are hopeful that it’ll soon be approved as a new treatment option.

A safer treatment for sickle cell disease might be on the way.

Research in Nature Nanotechnology reveals that special nanoparticles tested on mice can find and cure infected cells. Scientists hope this will help human patients avoid the current invasive and sometimes dangerous treatments. The team plans to test their findings on animals modified with human genes to better predict how the treatment with react in humans.

The longtime practice of crash dieting may be harming athletes’’ performance.

A lower caloric intake leads to lower energy levels and worse athletic performance, according to a study published in Redox Biology . Athletes also suffer a weaker immune system and higher stress levels from not eating enough. A sports organization called ‘team Denmark’ is using these results to create better diets for their athletes.
