Building the Covid Vaccine

You are here: Home / Archive / Feature Stories / Building the Covid Vaccine
Published: December 12, 2021 by RHJ Producer

The vaccine for Covid-19 was developed with record speed while still following required safety protocols. Gregory Zuckerman, a noted investigative reporter and contributor to The Wall Street Journal, joins us to discuss the Covid vaccine development process he uncovered during exhaustive research for his new book A Shot to Save the World: The Inside Story of the Life-or-Death Race for a Covid-19 Vaccine. He explains why the hundreds of interviews he did have reassured him that the vaccine is safe.

During his interview with Radio Health Journal producers, Zuckerman stresses the historic feat of developing a safe and effective vaccine in a record amount of time. “To develop such effective, protective vaccines so quickly… It was literally 330 days from the time the sequence was revealed for this new virus, to the time the first vaccine was tested and… authorized,” says Zuckerman.

Just like we’ve turned on the immune system for Covid-19, maybe we can turn it off when we need to for people that have an issue with their immune system.

“I don’t think we appreciate it enough,” Zuckerman continues. “I think we’ve entered a new era, where people are excited about new kinds of vaccines and applying mRNA and other of these approaches to things like cancer and MS. Just like we’ve turned on the immune system for Covid-19, maybe we can turn it off when we need to for people that have an issue with their immune system.”
