A Lasting Legacy: How Brain Donation Is Advancing Autism Research

You are here: Home / Archive / Feature Stories / A Lasting Legacy: How Brain Donation Is Advancing Autism Research
Published: May 16, 2026 by RHJ Producer

While organ donation can help save a life, brain donation can help save thousands. Specifically for autism, brain donations are helping researchers uncover the biological causes of the disorder to improve the quality of life for future generations. Our experts highlight the critical need for donation awareness and participation.

Guest Information:

  • Dr. David Amaral, scientific director, Autism BrainNet, Director of Research, UC Davis MIND Institute
  • Kathy Stein, donor’s loved one

After Eddie was diagnosed with a terminal disease, he, Kathy, and their three sisters were forced to think about his ‘end of life’ plan. In her research, Kathy came across a unique subset of science — brain donation.

While Alzheimer’s research has seen major advancements in knowledge over the last century, other conditions like autism are just beginning to access this type of investigation.
