In the Spring of 2022, surgeons performed the surgery on an infant who needed a valve replacement. The traditional method of using non-living valves would’ve required multiple, high-risk surgeries. This research could pave the way for one heart to be used for two donors – one who needs a new muscle while the other needs new valves. The study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
