Smartwatches used to track Covid symptoms

Smartwatches can now track your Covid symptoms. A new paper in the journal, Cell Reports Medicine, discovered that certain heart rate signals can indicate infection and even show how sick a person becomes. Scientists say using wearable technology to track a disease could be helpful in areas where medical resources are limited. Researchers also hope these findings lead to pre-detection of Covid and other illnesses (Univ. of Michigan).

Guns are now leading cause of death among adolescents

Guns are the leading cause of death among adolescents. Firearms recently overtook motor vehicles for the top spot, as gun-related deaths increased by 29 percent from 2019 to 2020. The New England Journal of Medicine published research showing over four thousand people, ages one through 19, died from firearms in 2020. Scientists believe these findings show a growing crisis in America that needs to be addressed.

Magnetic needles could be next evolution of surgery

Magnetic needles may be the next evolution of surgery. New research in the journal, Advanced Intelligent Systems, experiments with untethered needles that move throughout the body by way of magnets. Experts say this method could offer more precise and less invasive surgery. The next step is developing more accurate control methods to make magnetic needles a realistic surgical technique.

Research finds 8th grade math textbook provide almost no opportunities for students to develop math literacy

And finally… a recent study flunks math textbooks. Researchers found that eighth grade textbooks provide almost no opportunities for students to develop math literacy. The research was published as an OECD Education Working Paper and reveals the gap between education and practical function. The paper shows that less than one percent of the analyzed textbook exercises have real-world applications.
