The gift of sight…
Millions of people around the world are estimated to have an eye disease called retinitis pigmentosa. Those affected gradually lose their eyesight without any hope of reversing the damage. However, new research presented at the 2023 International Conference On Nanotechnology reveals that a retinal implant could restore sight. While more research is needed, the team’s hopeful it will one day be a treatment for vision loss.
Should kids wear headphones?
The 2024 national poll on children’s health reports that one in six parents estimate their child uses headphones for at least two hours a day. While they help keep kids entertained, earbuds can expose children to high volumes of noise that could result in hearing loss down the road. Young children are more vulnerable to this damage since their auditory systems are still developing.
What do humans and bulls have in common? Male infertility
One in eight couples around the world experience issues getting pregnant. Half of the time, the problems stem from fertility disorders in the man. New research published in Nature Communications studied reproductive organs in young bulls. Scientists found that many of the genes associated with fertility in bulls are the same for humans. They hope to use this finding to inform human fertility research.
Improving the future of plant-based foods
There’s been a recent push to switch our chicken and beef to more environment-friendly alternatives, but they’re not always a satisfying option. Fortunately, new research in ACS Nano shows that blue-green algae may be the key. They’re living organisms that researchers have gotten to produce a protein they wouldn’t normally have. This protein forms strands that resemble meat fibers, which scientists believe could be used to mimic the texture of meats and cheeses in plant-based products.
