Should everyone be screened for kidney disease?
Chronic kidney disease affects more than 37 million people in the U.S. Unfortunately, many patients are diagnosed after the condition has progressed to late-stage kidney disease. A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine proposes an idea to screen all adults over 35 for the condition. Researchers believe this will increase life expectancy and reduce the need for dialysis and kidney transplants.
Your avocado oil may not be as healthy as you think
The oil benefits your heart health, but new research shows that many of these products contain other additives or have become rancid sitting on the shelf. The study, published in Food Control, shows that just 31% of the avocado oil samples were pure. Nearly 70% of them didn’t meet the quality expectations advertised on the packaging. Researchers hope this information compels the food industry to improve their avocado oil products (UC Davis).
Do your eyes need to go to the gym?
Amblyopia, or lazy eye, is a common vision problem in young kids. It’s usually treated by having the patient wear an eye patch over the stronger eye, forcing the weaker one to work overtime. However, new research suggests that making both eyes work together will get better results. The study, published in Communications Biology, also shows that sleep habits affect how successful the therapy is.
Severe grief is bad for your heart
Researchers have set out to uncover why people can die of a broken heart – and they think blood pressure may be a factor. The participants who showed the highest levels of grief also had the greatest increase in blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease. The research is published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine (University of Arizona).
