A new test could better detect autism in children

Autism is a developmental disability that can greatly benefit from early intervention – but the first hurdle is making a diagnosis. Research published in the journal Neurological Sciences examined the eyes of 36 children already diagnosed with the condition, and 24 kids with typical development. By focusing on pupil dilation, scientists were able to show significant differences in the children with autism and those without. The researchers believe this method will improve the accuracy and speed of autism diagnoses.

Can air particles cause a heart attack?

Researchers in Singapore believe some cases of sudden cardiac arrest have been caused by small particles in air pollution called PM2.5. The paper, published in The Lancet Public Health, shows clear evidence of a short-term association between these small particles and out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The researchers suggest that the public wear air filtration masks when PM2.5 levels are elevated.

Pregnant women no longer have to give up caffeine

A study in the International Journal of Epidemiology determines that moderate coffee consumption during pregnancy will not lead to severe complications during childbirth. However, researchers caution that fetal development could still be affected in less serious ways that their narrow analysis has not yet explored.

A new, non-pharmaceutical approach to treating type two diabetes

A mouse study in the journal, Scientific Reports, used a plant called Rhodiola Rosea as a natural treatment. The root extract lowered fasting blood sugar levels and improved the body’s response to insulin injections. though more research is needed, scientists say this study showed very promising results.

Can grocery shopping actually predict longevity?

Researchers seem to think it’s one of 17 core predictors, falling under the category of physical function. The study, published in eBioMedicine, wanted to reveal the main causes of a long life. Among the 17 factors, scientists also discovered that a person’s smoking habits and cognitive function can influence their lifespan.
