Medical notes this week…

More drivers than ever are running red lights, and the number of people killed as a result has hit a 10-year high. The AAA says nearly a thousand people were killed by people running red lights in 2017, a 28% increase in just five years. Experts say distracted driving probably plays a role in the increase.

We’re in the midst of hurricane season, and once again, people have noticed a bump in premature births where a hurricane is approaching. Experts say there is a correlation between hurricanes and preterm births, as well as miscarriages, but that doesn’t mean “cause and effect.” Lower barometric pressure is often blamed for early births, but it could also be the stress of going through the storm. Doctors say it’s one more reason to be prepared when you’re expecting.

And finally, rose water has a history going back more than a thousand years, and it’s often used on the skin. But you may also want to think about cooking with it or even drinking it. A study in The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry finds that distilled rose water has a strong ability to fight free radicals in the body with antioxidants such as flavonoids and anthocyanins. Researchers say it’s also a good anti-inflammatory compound.
